Pack Manager 2000 - New Build v6.9.5.1
|
|
Gravity
Storm Software released new build 6.9.5.1of Service Pack Manager 2000.
This maintenance upgrade introduces bug
fixes.
Starting with the version 6.9.5.0 the
following new features and improvements
are available:
1. Reporting
Template-based report wizard that allows
to customize reporting of the scan
results. You can customize the report
appearance, that is, the type of data
displayed. You can also filter the
report data, that is, include or exclude
hotfixes by different criteria, such as:
- showing missing or hotfixes only, or
both
- showing security or non-security
hotfixes only, or both
- excluding obsolete hotfixes
- excluding superceded hotfixes
- excluding informational hotfixes
- showing hotfixes of particular
severity rating
The report wizard allows creating custom
templates. Two basic templates types are
available: Summary and Detailed. The
templates can be stored in a centralized
location on a local drive or network
share.
Also, you can create reports with two
clicks by selecting from a custom report
templates you created.
2. The NetGroups
The NetGroups feature has been revamped.
The NetGroup feature allows users to
create custom groups of computers
organized in arbitrary way according to
user's choice. Now, the user is able to
create and manage
hierarchical groups of unlimited nesting
levels. All the NetGroup functionality
(such as adding, editing, deleting
NetGroup nodes and machines) is
available either by drag-n-drop on the
network tree or from right-click popup
menu on the network tree. Adding
computers to the custom groups can be
done wither by machine name, IP address,
or a range of IP addresses. The user has
the option of resolving IP addresses to
computer names, or
displaying machines on the network tree
by their IP addresses. It is also
possible to export selected machines
from the NetGroups to .CSV text file,
and import machines to the selected node
of the NetGroups from .CSV text file.
3. Hotfix Severity Ratings
The hotfixes information includes now
severity ratings as defined by Microsoft
security bulletins. The user can sort by
severity rating, and also filter scan
results displaying only hotfixes of
selected severity ratings. The filtering
functionality is available both on the
OS- and Product Status tab and
accessible from right-click popup menu.
4. Hotfix Scan Results Filtering
Filtering scan results is also can be
done by other criteria similar to those
available in report wizard:
- missing/installed hotfixes
- security/non-security hotfixes
- obsolete/superceded/informational
hotfixes
5. Administrative Alert Scheduling
The administrative alert capability has
been improved. Now it is possible to
scheduled administrative alerts to be
sent to multiple (selected) machines.
6. User Interface Improvements
Numerous user interface improvements
have been made. For example, ToolTips/Balloon Tips
that include legends for variety of icon
indicators used in a scan results or
network enumeration.

The exploit of
existing security holes has been proven
and still remains #1 cause of external and internal
hacking. Patching security of your
network manually is not a viable
solution, unless you or your management
are willing to hire a team of system
administrators for this purpose only.
Service Pack Manager 2000 not only makes

cost-effective solution with incredible
ROI of hundreds of percent.

Windows 2000 Service Pack
4 - Should You Install It?
|
|
Windows
2000 Service Pack 4 is out. The question
asked by many system administrators is:
"To upgrade or not to
upgrade?". The answer to this
question is not simple and cannot be
answered at this time by simple
"yes" or "no".
Service Pack 4, as all previous Service
Packs is cumulative - it contains all
the patches that where issued after
Service Pack 3. Installing it can save
you significant time by making
installation of pre-SP4 individual
patches unnecessary. However, the
quality and stability of Service Pack 4
is still questionable since in our
experience many times Microsoft Service
Packs caused disruption in stability and
functionality of the OS. It is worth
waiting for several weeks before making
a final judgment about Service Pack 4.
There are several things you can do
meanwhile, such as:
- Read the documentation provided in
this newsletter.
- Install Service Pack 4 on a replicated
image of your production machines in a
test lab environment and watch the
results closely.
- Follow up the reviews at reputable IT
sites and discussion forums such as SecurityFocus,
BugTraq,
Labmice,
and TrueSecure
