Querying the Status of Network Resources
When
Service Pack Manager is loaded, it enumerates the network, and presents a
network tree of NT/2000/XP/2003 machines in a familiar Network Neighborhood form. To
perform a query, you can select any combination of
network resources, by marking the corresponding check boxes. Then, click on the
NetQuery button on the toolbar. Querying the network resources that have not been expanded
will automatically enumerate and expand them for you in the process. The checked network
resources of the higher hierarchy take precedence. That is, if you check the computers in
the domain and the domain node itself, the domain is enumerated and all the domain computers
are queried for installed Service Pack and Hotfixes, regardless of the selected
computers you checked under that domain.

- Query Results
The
results of the query appear in the right top pane. Every queried computer includes
information about the version and type of the Windows system, as well as the installed
Service Pack details. As you browse through the computer list, the right bottom pane
displays all the available Hotfixes corresponding to the Service Pack installed on the
selected computer. The Hotfixes that are already stored locally on your system
or on specified network share are
designated by a yellow indicator, while those that already have been installed on the
selected computer are designated by green indicator . Thus, you can easily compare what is
the status of the selected computer versus the available Hotfixes. You can download the
Hotfixes to your local computer by marking the corresponding check boxes and clicking on
the Download button on the toolbar.
- Hotfix is not present in
the download directory (as defined on Configuration Options
tab)
- Hotfix is downloaded to
and present in the download directory.
- Hotfix is installed
- Hotfix cannot be installed
(no executable file)
- Hotfix is obsolete
(superceded by a newer hotfix or has been withdrawn by Microsoft
- Hotfix is not present
in the download directory (red). It was never explicitly installed,
however there is no need to install it since it is covered by another,
more recent hotfix, that has been already installed on the target
machine.
- Hotfix is present in
the download directory (yellow). It was never explicitly installed,
however there is no need to install it since it is covered by another,
more recent hotfix, that has been already installed on the target
machine.
- Hotfix was explicitly
installed on the target machine. However it is also covered by
another, more recent hotfix, that has been already installed on the
target machine.
- This indicator shows that
the target machine should be rebooted in order to complete the hotfix
installation.
- Hotfix is scheduled for
installation. The installation process will be initiated on the SPM
machine at the selected date and time as indicated on the Status
Bar. No actions are taken by Service Pack Manager until the
installation process initiation.
- Reports
The query results can be exported to a file at the location of your choice, in
.CSV
(Comma Separated Values) format
by clicking the Export button on the toolbar. Clicking on the
Report button on the toolbar results in HTML-based report presented in
the embedded Web Browser on the OS Information page. The by-product of
the report generation is the Comma Separated Values file REPORT.CSV.
Once displayed, the report can be printed on a default printer.
- Hotfix Installation
To install a downloaded Hotfix, mark the corresponding
check boxes of the desired computers, check the Hotfix checkbox, and click the Install
button
on the toolbar. The Hotfix installation can be scheduled. Mark the checkboxes of
the desired Hotfixes and click on the Schedule button on the toolbar. To
enable scheduling, select the desired date and time and check the Enable
Scheduling checkbox on the dialog.
