- LiveUpdate
Preferences
- The LiveUpdate downloads the up to date database of Service Packs and
Hotfixes from the Gravity Storm Software's web site. The Download Site #1 is
the main web site that is used by default. In those cases when this service
is disrupted by ISP problems and the site becomes unavailable, the users may
chose from other 4 sites that serve as mirror sites.
- When the web site is not available or when Internet Connection from the
SPM machine is broken, it is possible to define shorter timeouts and
fewer number of retries for establishing valid connection. This option will
allow you to wait shorter periods of time before establishing that the
connection is broken.
- Network Enumeration
Filtering
The computers displayed on the network tree can be filtered according to the
type of OS running on them. The tree will show
either server class computers only, workstation class computers only, or all of
the NT/2000/XP/2003 computers, according to your selection in Microsoft Network
Enumeration Preferences on this tab.
- Proxy Credentials
If your connection to the Internet is established through proxy or
firewall that requires authentication of the LAN users on the way out, you
can supply the user name and password to be used with this proxy or
firewall.
- LiveUpdate
Scheduler
With Service Pack Manager you can schedule Live Updates in an easy
self-explanatory way by designating days of the week and time. Thus, the
latest available information, if any, will be waiting for you at the
designated time. If you desire to perform LiveUpdate immediately, it takes
only several seconds over T1/DSL/ISDN connection. Click on the LiveUpdate
button on the toolbar of either OS Information tab (for OS updates) or
Product Information tab (for product updates). You can also specify how long
you want to wait for connection, and how many connection retries to perform
- there is no need to wait for up to 3-4 minutes.
Administrative
Share
The default administrative share ADMIN$ is used by Service Pack Manager
in its operations, especially during Service Pack and Hotfix installations.
Some system and network administrators have renamed this share. In order for
Service Pack Manager to properly function in the above-mentioned cases,
the user can provide the name of the administrative share used on the target
machines. A word of caution: the remote machines that have its
administrative share named differently from the one defined on this tab,
will exhibit problems while the user is trying to install Service Packs and
hotfixes on them.
Download
Directory
The Download directory is the target directory for all downloaded Hotfixes. It
can be a directory on the local computer or a network share. If the designated
directory does not exist, Service Pack Manager will create it for you. You
are allowed to create one subdirectory at a time. You can also restore the
default Download directory - it is the Download sub-directory under
the directory you installed the Service pack Manager to. Starting with version
6.1.1.0, the hotfixes are downloaded to the separate sub-directories under
the Download directory you have specified. These subdirectories correspond
to the OS/product version and Service Pack Level, and are created
automatically by Service Pack Manager.
- Hotfix Profiler
Preferences
This tab also allows you to set the Hotfix Profiler preferences. You can
select to display only installed Hotfixes on the Hotfix Profiler
hierarchical tree, or missing Hotfixes only, or both. You can display the
User-Defined Hotfixes only (if you have defined any) in the Hotfix Profiler
results, or pre-defined Hotfixes supplied by Gravity Storm Software database via
LiveUpdate, or both.
Hotfix Installation Preference
This option allows to automatically
download hotfixes prior to the hotfix installation if the hotfix is not
present in the defined download directory (that is, the sub-directory under
the download directory). That is, when this option is checked, the user can
select the desired hotfix to install and the target machine and click the
Install button on the toolbar - the hotfix will be automatically downloaded,
and then installed.
